Lady Lever Art GalleryPort Sunlight Village (
0151-478-4136 Open From 1st of April or Easter (whichever is the soonest) to the end of October open daily 10am - 4pm. The rest of the year Monday-Friday only. Admission is free. Bank Holidays: closed New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day. Directions: The gallery is at the centre of Port Sunlight Village, a picturesque 19th century garden village, built by William Hesketh Lever for the workers in his soap factory. By rail - Port Sunlight station is on the Chester to Birkenhead route. By car - take the M53 north leaving at junction 4, then a short distance along the B5137 following the signs to Port Sunlight. It is well worth visiting the heritage centre first ( a small charge is levied) to get an understanding of the history of the village and the life of Lord Leverhulme before visiting the gallery. Further information about the village is available from the Heritage Centre 0151-644-6466. The gallery houses the permanent exhibition of the collection of the late Lord Leverhulme. This collection consist of paintings and furniture, mainly pre-raphaelite and contemporary to the period of Lord Leverhulme’s life including works by Millais, Holman Hunt and Leighton, and furniture by Chippendale, plus his extensive collection of ancient and contemporary pottery - one of the finest collections of Wedgwood pottery in the region. Near the exit, by the shop, is an interesting collection of masonic memorabilia. I would strongly recommend you take up the offer of the free audio guide which provides information on selected works. There is a large restaurant in the basement which serves snacks and meals. The gallery shop is reasonably sized with a selection of Lever memorabilia, postcards and art books. It is conveniently placed near the exit. A level entrance is provided for those with mobility
problems and there is reserved parking for disabled visitors.
